Here's the requests for support we have received so far this year. Please keep checking as we are now getting new requests each week. They are all available to see on STEM networking  -you need to filter on Local Authority = Essex, Southend, Thurrock to see all of the results.

The school D&T department has a number of 6th formers wishing to make silver jewellery - school has some materials but lacks silver soldering expertise.
Term of Olympic Themed STEM Activities - "What will UK PLC Gain from the Olympic Games" Year 8 See details - 3rd October to end of term Ormiston Park Academy, Aveley

The school are running a term of Olympics themed activities across the curriculum, encompassing all of the STEM subjects plus PE, Art, English, MFL and Communication. Trying hard to help the pupils see the links between subjects and some real-life context.

This is the first time a school has developed a plan like this with us so please help!


There is quite a detailed programme available but specifically they are looking for Ambassador/s who can talk briefly about how they use the subject matter in their job.

It doesn't need to be Olympics related - we've selected the STEM aspects below:
w/c 3/10: reaction times; design magnification and drawing development.
w/c 17/10: Time lines, timing generally; healthy body; Gant charts & project planning.
w/c 31/10: fractions and percentages; designer materials; production flow charts
w/c 7/11: cost of games/profit; streamlining
w/c 14/1: reliability of results
w/c 21/11: affect of weight/shape/mass on objects
w/c 5/12: science of the Luge

Chemistry at Work Ages 15/16 18th and 19th October Cruise Terminal Building, Tilbury Docks

Ambassadors with a chemistry background needed to support this event where pupils in Year 10 attend for a half-day and undergo hand-on activities and see demonstrations, being organised in association with the Royal Society of Chemistry plus IChemE.


We are looking for STEM Ambassador specialists, who use the science of chemistry in their everyday work, presenting short explanatory seminars explaining the wide range of situations where this science is used in commerce. 


As this is a late request, any general help would be great if you can't specifically run an activity.

Totota Technology Challenge Day  - Solar Vehicles 
 Year 7
8th December 2011
 Beauchamps School, Basildon
The school are running a day of design and make a solar vehicle for entry into the Toyota Challenge -see http://www.rapidonline.com/toyota/rulesandcriteria/solar-vehicle.html and are looking for scientists and engineers with an interest in recycling or solar energy to help the teams.
CREST Award Support Ages 11-18 Any time to suit you Chelmsford County High School for Girls

The school would like Ambassadors to help with 2 things:
1) to watch a presentation about "Energy from Waste" projects and if possible (not essential) comment about how this happens in industry - the pupils have worked towards a Bronze CREST award


2) to come up with some ideas for longer term projects in any subject for silver and gold CREST awards.
Support than then stop then or you could work with the students from time to time to assist with the project. Opportunites to assess their work at the end of project also available.

Colchester Area Careers Fair Ages 14-18  Wednesday, 2nd November - daytime for 16 year olds, evening for ages 14-18 with parents Weston Homes Stadium, Colchester

Exhibitors in the STEM fields needed to support this event, the aim of which is to ensure that the local young people and their parents are fully aware of the many careers available, their occupational routes, training and entry requirements.


At careers fairs we have short chats with young people about what we do for a job and give them some general info about careers in STEM. This is a good intro if you've never done anything as a STEM Ambassador before as the interactions are short and relatively informal.


explore STEM will have a general STEM stand which you could be at and we invite you to bring along some careers literature and/or demos from your company. Alternatively you could bring your own corporate stand along - there is no charge for being part of the event.

Year 11 Mock Interview Day Year 11 (ages 15-16) Friday 25th November St Mark's School, Harlow School are holidng a mock interview day and are looking for people to assist with interviewing their students, and then giving the student feedback on how it went. The school will gie you advice on this if needed.
Visits for Year 12 science pupils Ages 17-18 To be arranged Chafford Hundred School, Thurrock School is looking for companies to host visits by A'level science students.Very keen school just started to offer A'levels.
Help with KS3 for Control Systems/electronics Ages 11-14 To suit The Boswells School, Chelmsford School are wishing to expand the range of D&T options on offer to include Systems and Control.
Anyone who can offer any occassional support and advice to students in this area would be welcome, and we can work out the details of how much help is needed to suit you. 
Visits to see science labs Ages 17-18 To suit Clacton Coastal Academy

Some students in the sixth form study BTEC Level 3 Science and the class teacher would really like to set up some lab visits as for part of their course they have to design a laboratory. Ideally: 

a) a working lab where research or testing is going

b) a University

c) a lab in the NHS

If you live or work near any of the schools below then please think about helping out, even a half an hour chat could make a real difference to a student's outlook and careers choices.

School have had all the component parts to build a Gravity Racer for years (see website for details) but need expertise to assist with build and racing. Any Ambassador with an interest in cars would love this challenge!
